Homebuyer Tax Credit Extension In the Works?

In case you haven’t heard, the House of Representatives voted yesterday to extend the homebuyer tax credit by three months, but only in a limited fashion.

More specifically, they’re looking to extend the deadline for closing on your new home if you went under contract before the April 30th deadline. If, on the other hand, you’re currently shopping for a new home, this measure won’t help.

Apparently the fate of 200,000 prospective homebuyers hangs in the balance, as they got under contract in time but are struggling to close by the June 30th (today!) deadline. The Senate, who tried to pass something last week as part of a failed job creation bill, has since been pushing their own legislation.

Personal Loan ? Finance for Everybody

Personal loans can be broadly categorised into secured and unsecured loans. While unsecured loans are, unanimously, the most popular loan in the market today, secured loans are fast gaining credence.

Secured personal loans are those loans that require a collateral to be furnished from the borrower’s side in order for the loan to be dispensed. Unsecured personal loans are given out without the presence of a collateral. Of course, there are subtle variances between the loans. With both these personal loan types, the borrower can use the money any way he chooses to. Generally, these funds cater to needs like purchasing a car, buying or renovating a home, going for a vacation etc.

With a secured personal loan, one can borrow up to £75,000 and have a repayment term of twenty-five years. Ho

Congress working on tax deduction for Haiti donors

By NIRVI SHAHnshah@MiamiHerald.com

Taxpayers may be able to write off cash donations made to relief efforts in Haiti on their 2009 income tax returns. The U.S. House unanimously passed a bill Wednesday that would make donations made after Jan. 11 and before March 1 deductible for 2009.

The goal is to encourage donations beyond the $275 million already given, according to estimates by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Senate is expected to pass the bill as well. Without a change, donations made this year couldn’t be deducted from income taxes until taxpayers file 2010 returns. In 2005, a similar law was created to encourage donations to victims of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that happened at the end of 2004. <

Credit card companies are competing with debit card use

Credit card companies are increasingly competing with debit card use because so many Britons are wary of interest rates, an expert has claimed.

Peter Harrison, head of credit cards at comparison service Moneysupermarket.com, revealed that about 60 per cent of consumers pay off their credit card balance off in full every month.

“They want to know how they can entice them to use credit cards instead of debit,” he said. “The answer is to give them something for nothing.”

Companies are therefore offering ‘rewards’ for spending money to entice consumers to use their card.

Meanwhile, Moneyfacts, the independent provider of personal finance information, claimed recently that the credit card market has seen a resurgence in recent months.

In the last year, the number of cards charging no interest on new purchases for at least ten months has increased by a staggering 450 per cent, Moneyfacts said.

Over the same period, the number of cards offering zero per cent on balance transfers for at least ten months has climbed by 20 per cent. Full Article

The Downside of Travel Rewards

Despite my revelation on Friday that we’re getting an AmEx Delta SkyMiles card, I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of travel-based rewards. This goes for both airline and hotel rewards programs. There are several reasons for this…

Redemption difficulties

First and foremost, it’s often difficult to redeem your rewards even if you’ve saved up a ton of points or miles. In fact, most programs have blackout dates during which you’re not allowed to book flights or rooms.

Beyond this, hotels and airlines both commonly have very restrictive capacity controls, meaning that you have to book very early (often six months or more in advance) in order to find availability.

Free isn’t free

Another problem is that your “free” rewards often aren’t free. While most hotel re
